WATER CRISIS – Clean water is the number one need in third world countries today!
- 1.4 billion people in the world do not have access to clean water
- 7 million people die every year, including 1.8 million children of diseases caused by unclean water
- Water related disease is the second largest killer of children worldwide
- Households in rural Africa spend an average of 26% of their time fetching water; it is generally women that are burdened with the task
- Americans use an average of 106 gallons of water per day, the average person in the third world uses 2.6 gallons per day
Drilling for water is central to numerous self-help projects to assist people in getting out of the slums, to set up agricultural communities that are self-sufficient in watering productive plots to produce crops that the people need for food and survival. Update: January 2010 -- The water well for the women at the Women’s Centre in Oltinga went off without a hitch thanks to our partners “Well Aware”. They raised the funds for this well last summer by holding a Shower Stike where the women of Well Aware and all their supporters went for 1 week without a shower in the August heat to raise awareness and funds for this well. The water is now flowing in Oltinga, Kenya and the women are still learning to read and write at the center while now also growing food for their families. No drought and no famine any longer there! This well benefited over 20,000 people plus all their livestock.
